Mendelssohn's orchestral symphonies for strings on a Hyperion 3 CD set - there's 13 all written between the age of 12 & 14. I literally lose track of time when these are on.

U2 ' The Broadcast Collection'

Image

Topping up on life's necessities in the Lidl this morning, I spotted a rack of CD boxes in the sale section and had a nose though. Boring, boring, bad, boring .... oh! U2? A 4CD set of radio broadcasts from concerts in the US during 1982-1983. Songs from their vital first 3 LP's. Giveaway price - so that went in the trolley along with the other shopping.

Three concerts:
1) New York 1982; the band are still a bit rough but the energy is palpable and they storm through this set with fire.
2) San Bernadino 30th May 1983; a year later and more polished. Sadly the recording is of poorer quality but they were full throttle (again). Importantly, this set was just a week before the famous 'Live at Red Rocks' gig which proved that U2 was a force to be reckoned with.
3) Boston Orpheum 6th May 1983; a full concert spread over 2 CD's. Excellent recording, inspired performance. If you love 'Red Rocks' (I do!) then this is just fantastic.

Memory lane. Rock on.

How's the SQ? I tend to avoid those "Legendary Broadcasts" sort of box sets unless I've seen them reviewed somewhere, and the SQ is mentioned, as many of them sound like they were recorded with the mics inside a shoebox. "Muffled," is a common description.

Disc 1 is okay. 2 is a shoebox. But the Boston concert on 3 & 4 could be a soundboard recording. Very clear.

I now have several of these box sets and the quality is variable but there is always at least one disc that makes it worthwhile.

That's kind of my experience of those sets, usually one real cracker, one stinker and one that's ok. Oddly some of the 'soundboard' recordings sound more like they were recorded through a washboard.

The Bowie/NIN one is excellent, and there is a good Beefheart one An Ashtray Heart. all the Dylan ones are not great, not terrible, just not great.

Birdy Young Heart Double LP played at 45rpm. Wonderful quality recording and a number of slow burn tracks. I think this one will enjoy multiple trips to my TT

I have just put on the Black Keys - Brothers double LP., it arrived this morning. The recording is so bad I had to take it off and put another LP on because it sounded like something in my playback system was broken.
By some distance this is the worst recorded LP I have heard in a long time. In summary side 1 was so shit I might not bother with the other 3 sides 🙉
