Haven't heard the Blackfield albums though.
The Blackfield albums are as close to pop and mainstream as Steven Wilson is likely to get. Some terrific songs and tunes in collaboration with Israeli singer/songwriter Aviv Geffen. If you were going to dip your toe, take a listen to this live album...

Besides being a brilliant rock album, I've long thought that this album has the best recorded drums I've heard. Awesome.
