If it follows recent trends the vinyl version, at a high price, will have good DR and the digital version will be brickwalled. Don't see why there can't be two versions of the digital master which could be labelled radio and hifi.

Indeed. Why in 2024 is it so difficult for Knopfler to release an album that's at least as well recorded and produced as Communique from 1979?

In 79 we did not have mass market, low cost digital devices and DR was capped by the constraints of analogue play back.

Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell illustrates that they were quite capable of producing mediocre recordings in the 1970's.

Moronic music biz producers have been around forever. The difference being that in the 21st century they're all wedded to their dynamic compression machines.

I think in this day and age most people listen through Bluetooth in less than quiet environments. The majority holds sway. I have to admit that modern compressed masters sound better on my Bose Mini sounding than those with a wider dynamic range which come into there own on the hi fi systems.

The issue of brickwalling seems to be getting more attention and there has been a lively discussion on the Qobuz Club forum. Someone bought a recent hi res remaster of a Muse album expecting it to sound brilliant. He was gutted on discovering the earlier master sounded a lot better.

How do you know he hasn't?

If he's taken the trouble to produce 45 RPM vinyl that's been half-speed mastered, why wouldn't he go the whole hog?
