I just ordered Classical Black Music by Youssef Dayes on CD. £9.98. The vinyl is over £40.

That's about par for the course these days.

Prices of new LPs are ridiculous and the whole 'vinyl experience' has become an enormous fashion-hype with the manufacturers taking this to their advantage and profits.

The new generation of music fans, having emerged into a streaming-dominated world, aren't bothering with CD. Their loss.

Only last night a friend was extolling the virtues of vinyl over CDs, He then proceeded to show me a "fantastic" re-release of an old jazz album. It was on an obscure eastern european label with poor quality printing of the sleeve notes. I hadn't got the heart to tell him it was probably cut from a CD.

From an old master tape to CD if he was lucky, more often a needle drop, to cd then back to vinyl with really 30's - 50's less mainstream jazz.
But as long as they are happy.....

it's been a very long time since I've posted here but I've been snapping up second hand CDs from various places for years and have recently got back to buying vinyl as well. I do prefer physical media to streaming

I only bought a couple of new CDs for the first time in probably 5 years because I have been waiting for a rerelease of Pharoah Sanders' 1977 album Pharoah. It cost £21.47 compared to over double that for the Vinyl version. Then I got a Stan Getz CD for £3.79 to take the cost over the free postage threshold.

I have also noticed that while common CDs are usually cheap, most genres that aren't mainstream are rising in value. There are 5 Jazz CDs and one CD box set on my eBay watch list priced between £9.99 and £19.99, a few years ago I wouldn't have expected to pay more than £8 for these. Even the box set was under a tenner new pre pandemic but I believe that it is now oop. Comparing prices between Discogs and eBay doesn't usually make much difference.

I think I may have seen someone else here recommending Momox for online CD purchases and I would definitely agree. They do take a little bit longer to get to the UK but their grading is definitely better than Music Magpie or World of Books.

Oh, and I've recently found a place selling overstocks of sealed recent LPs for £3, I get the feeling that for all but the most popular of artists there is going to be a glut of overstocks. I got the second Samara Joy album this way which I wouldn't have expected to find on CD yet.

"By all means spend £1,000 on a fancy interconnect that will provide some additional musical insight. But can it really be ten times better than the £100 cord it replaced?"

But ...but ...but ...inky blackness? Subterranean noise floor?

May have said this before-
The only reason I don’t have a cdp is the storage of the cds-with a considerable Lp collection I just don’t have the room for both. I don’t even own a cdp now- do I miss it?- yes sounds fab and also miles cheaper than an Lp but I am so used to streaming now it’s almost my number one choice for listening (almost😂)

Storage was the big issue for me as the CD collection got huge, far too big when we were moving and down sizing. Ripped them all and sold them. No regrets. Have not had a CD player for years except in the car. Do not use this as I prefer a USB stick. I am now converting Flac rips to WAV. I am also buying second hand old CDs of albums I have on vinyl if the DR has not been wrecked by the loudness wars. These are ripped to WAV.

Just to prove I'm still buying them, I've (pre) ordered a new double CD. It was completed just before Bernie's death in August this year,
