Happy hi-fi stories

Unread post by Lindsayt »

Yesterday's Barnsley-Penistone Wam hi-fi show included 2 examples of happy hi-fi stories.

1 Three years ago on ebay.fr a recording studio were looking to dispose of a pair of their old monitors. They listed them 250 euros. They sat in the 'bay for weeks with no one biting. Until desperate to get rid of them, they opened the listing up to offers. Step in the protagonist of our story who asked them what offer they would accept and they replied with 50 Euros if he could collect them. So he booked an instant holiday and found the speakers just inside the door of the studio, doing a good job of blocking the passage.
The foam surrounds on the woofers were totally rotten, requiring a DIY repair job on arrival back in the UK.
Yesterday these 4 way full sized Fostex monitors were exhibited at the show.

2 Another room at the show featured up-engineered DIY JBL 4430 clones. These were created after the protagonist of this story saw two pairs of old water damaged JBL studio monitors for sale. On arriving to inspect them, the cabinets were totally ruined but the woofers were in good condition. The seller asked him if he'd be interested in some of their other stuff they were looking to dispose of. This included an internally corroded reverb unit - which he bought because in the back of his mind he remembered it was a good brand.
