Many may already know this but I did not - NVA Amps

Unread post by Bencat57 »

I have been having issues with distortion for a few weeks and I first noticed it on the right speaker . After much messing about I had decided that one of the Quads had a problem panel so made arrangements to get it back to AQuadthing Audio . Then today I noticed that the left speaker was starting to distort too which means it was not likely the Quads were at fault .

After a bit of plugging and unplugging of various components I found out that NVA Amps do not like DC Blockers . I have one pluged in and then run my extension from that . Taking the DC Blocker out of the chain restored the clean sound and allowed the volume to be pushed up without the sound breaking up with distortion .

Now there may be many on here that knew about this but I have found out the hard way . Things have returned to normal now and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I have not damaged the Amp .

Hope this helps some one else .

Interesting. I have a DC Blocker sitting before the input to my NVA BMU and found that it improved the sound quality. It was needed to counter annoying buzzing from NVA amps caused by my solar panel array.

Different things work for different setups.

Different makes of DC blockers...?

I tried one ahead of my original BMU (which buzzed a lot) but adding the DC blocker flattened the sound.

Then I got a new BMU with Toroidy transformer and it doesn't buzz at all.

That is the same as the one I was using . I do agree though it is different results for different systems as the ATL worked fine with no issues in my three way active system which by chance also has NVA Amplifiers in it . But now not sure if I will use it anywhere may just put it up for sale .

I have the DC blocker from Bulgaria. It stopped the BMU buzzing but had a slight adverse effect on SQ. Stopped using it.

My experience is similar to Fretless'. The SQ improved slightly with the same DC blocker and the buzzing went completely.

Horses for courses?
