I'm sure I read somewhere, someone saying that they'd tried moving iron cartridge(s) and been delighted with the results?
I think I read the Goldring 2000 series are MI? I don't think they've ever really become quite as well established as the 1000 series though.

The 2400 has been discontinued (not sure about the rest of the range) - you can pick up the last dealer stock for less than £300 with a bit of haggling.

I’ve had several Grado cartridges- Prestige Gold and 2 of their wood series- bit underwhelming but nothing actually wrong with them- a safe buy as they won’t unset u nor will they excite u.
I preferred the Sumiko Pearl at that time to either which at £100 then was not ‘budget’ mm.
I had an Orgin Like Onyx at the time

Interesting. I know (Vinyl) Ant has gone back to MM and I've long pondered trying a MI myself. At that price I might take a punt and have it sitting there for when my current cartridge starts showing its age.

The price of cartridges seems to have gone up more than any other items of hifi equipment and they have a limited life span. The last cartridge I bought was a highly regarded Denon high output moving coil around twelve years ago and it cost me little more than £50. Could well be due to far less demand and higher production costs. Glad I gave up on vinyl.

Vinyl as in the actual record is far more expensive than other music formats and what my turntable arm and cartridge cost far out strips the money spent on digital- digital sound quality is great these days for little money- unfortunately for me i do prefer the sound of a record but acknowledge digital quality

I'm very picky about what vinyl I buy nowadays, even secondhand.

In the past I would happily pick up 20 or 30 albums at a time in a secondhand shop and find I'd spent less than a hundred quid. Can't even do that from charity shops, now.

I have to really, really want an album to buy it new, nowadays.

Streaming is now the format for the masses, and there is a lot to be said for that.

I have got the 2 grado mi, they are ok, i keep them as spares. I had a soundsmith othello mi which was absolutely lovely. Shame the stylus was crap. When it wasnt mistracking it was fabulous. It was too expensive for me to go higher in the range, but i would have liked to get hold of one with some sort of line contact stylus on it because the rubbish tracking, even on the air bearing arm drove me up the wall.

A real shame, it was fantastic otherwise
