Smsl m9 installed and making definite improvements over the MF M1 dac-
What now- I need to improve the source to get max benefit - it’s currently telling me the laptop running Tidal has an input of 48khz pcm which I can filter etc but that won’t change the input
Is this where I try volumio etc?

A simple experiment is to load the Volumio X86 OS onto a USB stick and boot the laptop from that. It will not damage or erase anything on that PC whilst operating from the stick.

You might need to do a free trial subscription on Volumio to get Tidal access.

Other options are Roon and HQ Player of which others here (Savvy & George Hincapie to name but 2) have experience.

My vote would be to get a separate streaming device (Pi, Tinkerboard, Fanless Mini PC) and put Volumio on that, controlled by your laptop/phone/tablet.

HQ Player can upsample to DSD, Volumio to 768KHz PCM.

Yeah, and I still can't get the DACMagic 200 to recognise when Volumio is streaming a MQA mastered file from Tidal. It also doesn't do it via Bluetooth from my phone direct from Tidal either

I don't know if Volumio can handle MQA - DSD direct is possible and also conversion of DSD to PCM for non-DSD DACs.

Not sure about that. Would be worth comparing with Qobuz which to my ears sounds slightly better through WiFi. Qobuz is slightly cheaper but the catalogue is not quite so good.

The phone using tidal should present MQA straight to the DAC ... Unless the phone I'm using doesn't support aptX on its Bluetooth ... Dont have a USB C to B cable so can't test a direct connection. May try downloading a few MQA tracks to a USB stick and see how the DAC handles that

Don't think that is possible but I could be wrong as I am not an IT wizz kid. Have only downloaded Qobuz and Tidal to my phone and tablet. With Tidal (have taken up the 60 day £2 offer) I have problems accessing downloaded content, but not with Qobuz.

Volumio install has been frustrating me
Once loaded it doesn’t give me a usb sound out option- I don’t know what I’m doing
Anyway possibly new laptop or mini pc time but on another tangent what do u think of these

Do you have your DAC on and switched to to USB input?

When booting, Volumio looks for an active USB connection and shows this as an Output Device in Playback Options.

Select this. Press Save and restart Volumio.

Always turn your DAC on before the PC.
