Usually a band's best release is their first lp - or, at least, one of their best.
Less common is a weak first release.
Can you think of any?
Siouxsie & Banchees - The Scream

Genesis 'Genesis to Revelation', produced by Jonathan King.
Actually I found 'The Scream' to be better than the follow-up 'Join Hands'. And The Cure's 'Three Imaginary Boys' was fairly amateuristic, they improved rapidly after that.
The Passions 'Michael and Miranda'.

Aye, everyone seems to cry down/dismiss the first Genesis but I enjoy the Jonathan King touch. Sure, the strings soften it ,and you'd likely want the sound raw - especially on "The Conqueror" - but don't forget , King or no, the lp starts off with "Where The Sour Turns To Sweet" and most lyrics here ARE soft and songs, gentle.
I have no trouble with the first Genesis, the tunes are all strong. That lp has one of my all-time fave Genesis tracks.

I agree with you about the Scream and join hands. Love the scream. ( I think it was about the 4th album I bought, on release.)
