My basic music network.

Unread post by slinger »

For what its worth, and for anyone still wondering what the bloody hell we're banging on about in some of these posts about DACs and such, I've tried to create a very simple little diagram of what my very simple little cabled "music network" looks like. Things are not necessarily cabled to the exact ports shown on the 8-port Cisco switch, I've used a bit of artistic license to make the diagramming easier. It shouldn't matter greatly where things are plugged in though.

The PC is included in the diagram because I use it to control Volumio most of the time and to add more albums to the NAS (Network Attached Storage) boxes, which are set up in a RAID** 1 configuration. All RAID 1 means is that there are two 2TB disks in each box, and the same data (e.g. a new album) is written to both of those disks at the same time. That way if one disk fails the other will still hold all of my music. I've split them between classical and non-classical albums, as you can see, for no other reason than that it made sense to me. to do it that way when I bought the second NAS.

The ASUS is connected to my DAC, and so the amp etc via one of its USB ports.

** RAID = "Redundant Array of Independent Disks or "Redundant Array of Inexpensivee Disks"

like the idea of 2 NAS units, Slinger. My single 3TB disk is almost full - time to expand.

Will have a look at the Synology range.

I have had a Synology DS118 ( with WD 4TB HDD ) for over 2 years now and have been very pleased with its performance and reliability. I play my files ( FLAC/WAVE) through my Squeezebox Touch and the results are truly excellent. I went for a single disc Synology NAS as I back up everything onto 2 separate WD external hard drives so didn't feel the added expense of a 2 disc enclosure was needed.

Both of my Synology boxes were bought "used" on eBay. There's currently a "Synology DiskStation DS212+ NAS with two 3TB WD Red hard drives" being auctioned. The starting price is eighty quid. It might be worthwhile keeping an eye on it. WD Red drives are not the best, but they'd still set you back at least £35 or £40 each in used condition.
