Greetings all. My dad heard a Grieg symphony recently on the radio and would like the CD. He's noted down symphony no.5 but having looked at the discography I only see symphony 1 and 2. Before I spend his dosh on the wrong CD thought it would be helpful to ask the brains here. I'm guessing it was classic fm, who are playing Grieg this evening. But I couldn't find yesterdays playlist for show notes.
And where is a good place to buy CDs these days ? I'm sick of Amazon & Ebay. Thanks.

A word of caution. I heard Zubin Mehta and the Israeli phiharmonic play Respighi's "The Pines of Rome". Bought an LP (don't remember who it was playing /conducting) but it wasn't the same piece of music - the notes were corr4ect but the life had been squeezed out of it.

Neeme Järvi is a safe bet as a conductor for Grieg.
This is a very decent Pines...

Re: Edvard Grieg symphony no.5
There is a BBC programme called Building a Library where different recordings of the same piece are played. The difference is very enlightening. I have multiple recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies my favourite recording of the 9th is actually one I made, by means of a timer, of a prom from the 1980s. I think I was actually in the Albert Hall at the time.TheMadMick wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 10:47 pm A word of caution. Greig wrote only two symphonies plus symphonic dances the second symphony was never completed merely sketched.
