Over the top

It was another name used for Led Zep Moby Dick but that is not the point of this thread.

Look at this http://www.rotel.com/en-gb/product/p5

This is a preamp ffs. Look at that circuit board stuffed to the brim with delicious electronic goodies. Enough to make any misdirected over paid audio fool moist. Imagine trying to fault find that monstrosity :epopc: I avoid things like this like the plague or should I say covid.

It can't be doing the music any good squeezing it through that lot. It surely comes out the other end a sad version of it's former self but probably very hifi - a facsimile of the original. What's wrong with a volume contro, selector switch, a few wires and some sockets on the back ?

It's got Dac's in it and other control circuitry. Maybe the signal doesn't go through all that bollox but even so.

Some modern hifi is an answer looking for a problem.

No thanks.

You can say that again!

To keep themselves in a job some designers seem to have decided that everything must go through the Hi-Fi system, TV, CD, DVD, Phono, Tape, computer, telephone, radio, door bell... Not only that but the box has to be 19" wide and high enough to carry a set of XLR connectors to look "Professional". How long before some opportunistic dealer starts selling Neutric Gold XLRs at £100 a time? (They are £8 on Amazon)

I could not contemplate having a streamer, DAC and pre amp in one box.

Did you see the weight of the thing? I think they're charging by the ounce for it.

Personally, I'd not rubbish a product I'd not actually heard, or at least read a factual test report from a reliable source.

Let's not forget that even amongst hi-fi affectionados, there are those who value a low box count. :)

It's design ethos is a matter of fact.

Indeed Paul. But does that automatically mean it will be a bad performer ?
