I have a cartridge-less Planar 6 for sale at present if you did want to bypass the 'do it yourself' route and simply get the tt that already has all the logical upgrades (PSU/machined subplatter/duallayer platter etc.) that you can possibly do to the lower spec'ed models. . Not advertised here yet so shoot me a PM if you're interested. I'm in Chester btw.
Everything has already been upgraded in my deck, bar the platter itself (and isolating the motor)... plint is the next step
Modded Belles A150 MK2, P90SA, & NVA SSP cables, and LS5.
Leak Stereo 20 & First Audio Classic Copper V2
Modded Lenco GL75 with Saturn arm, heavy custom plinth. Nagaoka MP500.
Nottingham Audio Hyperspace + heavy kit, + Origin Live Conqueror + Koetsu Black
Tom Evans Micro Grove MK2 MC phono
Bluesound Node2i (x2) both with latest power upgrades.
Topping D90MQA and Topping D90SE
Audiolab 6000 CDT transport.
All NVA cables
I still find it strange that belt drive is considered fine for a tape deck but not for a turntable; funny old world. Fitting a DC motor to a turntable isn't guaranteed to improve speed stability, the power supply is important too. Synchronous AC motors on the UK mains are pretty stable as far as speed is concerned. Electromagnetic interference may be another matter.

Quite a fun journey, isn't it? I did something similar with the P5 I sold about 5 years ago. I thought the Groove Tracer subplatter was the biggest improvement.
Couple of years ago, I bought Planar3 and put origin live silver arm and gr1042 cart in it. Quite quicly motor bearing started to make noise and was replace with Rega 24v motor kit. Then I discovered Michael Lim parts and now it contains skeletal plinth with bracings, feets, bearing, subplatter and motor isolation base from Michel and delrin platter.

Cool. Got. Photo?
Review? Was the fully loaded plinth worth it?

I forget to mentiin dual pulley and silcion belts. I did those upgrades step by step and each step improved sound. Plinth itself glued every individual improment together, to make the sound comlete. I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

Everybody as theories on turntable propulsion. So much so, its one of those things that can only be settled by empirical experience.
I know 2 things.
I couldn't believe the difference from changing an ac to dc motor on my pink.
I couldn't differentiate between a dc belt drive and an idler in terms of speed correctness, but I preferred the presentation of the idler.
Oh and I think a load of shit is talked about direct drives. But that is currently only a suspicion.
I have no issue with any of that, indeed hearing somebody's experience is always useful. However as an engineer I really want to know what it is about the different drives that affects the sound, and preferably why.
