Toilet rolls... I'm sure that many here may remember the great shortages in the mid 70s. In particular, sugar, toilet rolls and potatoes were hard to find.

Only because idiots rush out and strip supermarket shelves. I blame the BBC! As if most bog rolls and tatties are imported. LOL.Simon Hickie wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 2:10 pm Toilet rolls... Are they not imported. Are you just guessing.
Addendum added later.
It seems as far as toilet roll is concerned, you are just guessing. The vast majority of our supply is European imported.

I blame the BBC for many things. However, back in the 70's (no social media of course), there were genuine shortages. As a student, I remember paying 20p for a pound of spuds - about £4.50 a kilo in today's money. That was a pint of beer's worth! We then discovered the joys of brown rice and spaghetti as a more affordable alternative, leaving more money for beer and records. I clearly remember people emerging from corner shops clutching their plastic bags of precious white granules - sugar of course. For toilet rolls we often had to make do with ghastly French imports, not nice soft Andrex. Izal Extra Harsh was an alternative.Classicrock wrote: ↑Fri Aug 23, 2019 4:46 pmOnly because idiots rush out and strip supermarket shelves. I blame the BBC! On the fresh veg front, membership of the EEC had a serious impact on market gardening in parts of the UK. In winter, while our veg was frozen in the ground, nice clean and readily available continental imports put many market gardeners out of business. Certainly where I used to live until recently, what was prime market gardening land is now increasingly covered in houses.
So yes, Brexit is bound to disrupt supply chains, and there will be shortages of certain items at times. And yes, panic buying will empty supermarket shelves.
