Recently I am mostly reading Shirley Jackson's novels and short stories, interspersed with some of Georges Simenon's 'Maigret' novels, and 'Ghost Milk' by Iain Sinclair. However, this evening I was reading my PhD thesis.

Simenon Maigret novels are simple mysteries, badly-written.
He was too busy fucking women - he bragged about fucking 100's - to write proper.

..................

Jackson is excellent. Short story, "The Lottery" is classic and of course, the novel, "haunting of Hill House".

It's funny with Simenon's novels; I sort of think 'this is crap' as I'm reading them, but they sort of stay with me. Plus they're very short so only take a couple of hours.

Jackson's novel 'Hangsaman' is also excellent; less so 'The Bird's Nest' which goes on a bit.

We never had Janet and John; it was Dick and Dora with us, with hilarious results. But I could read fluently long before I went to school and got through that series like a dose of salts, so was allowed to bring library books in and read them instead.
