Assburn lets it all hang out

"Where did progressive rock start?"

Obviously no one knows cos anyone totally unknown and never unearthed could have started something.

So the question becomes "First recorded "prog".

Cocksuckers and defectives say "Court of Crimson King", Procol Harum...etc Just like on this forum.

Only a bonafide PROGMASTERMAN knows the true answer.

Of course no one here has even come close.

Shall Blind Child spill big time?

I'm not silly enough to even attempt a definitive answer, because there's a 99.99% chance we'd fail to agree on a single album. I'd say it was when sixties 'psych' turned into sixties 'prog' but the actual, single, crossover album... :-?

On the other hand - - Wendy Carlos? Beaver & Krause? Morton Subotnick? Stockhausen even? Depends on your definitions of "prog," "rock," and "prog-rock," I suppose.

O.K. Ramble over.

"Freak Out" - if not the first, then really early!

Im not going there.
Blind Child has argued this many times beefwhore.
"FreakOut" is not prog -Zappa insisted so - and the two/three tracks you are specifically thinking of are not either.

...........................

I will agree with Slinger that there is no clear-cut SCHISM (beefwhore "Court of Crimson King" lp).
Going back into this primordial sludge when the first pinkies were being raised into a new atmosphere, its rather silly to pinpoint a single instant. (It is sorta Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle).Things were evolving very quickly then and it is very unlikely to find a band/artist who pressed all the relevant "prog" buttons back then.

But the "Doll's House...err wotsit" lp by group Audience (released pre Crimson) I believe DOES press most of them buttons. So that then is my choice.

But there is one band earlier than this which performed Mar '67 and which BOTH FRIPP AND EMERSON SAW PERFORM.

Unfortunately the band never released a lp.
