Jóhann Jóhannsson - Flight From The City

Is it Ambient? Classical? Electronic? All I know it that it comes from Iceland and it is the most utterly beautiful, haunting and mysterious music I have heard in a long, long time.
The final work from Johann Johannsson before his untimely death takes you on Orpheus' journey into the Underworld. Here represented as a dream--scape of floating melodies and incorporeal voices. Soothing and unsettling, this is minimalist music that just demands your attention.

Everyone interested in the power of music should give this a listen.

Rachel Podger & Holland Baroque - spring from The Four Seasons: Largo - Vivaldi

Currently Nomber One in the UK Classical Music charts (and picking up praise and awards by the truckload) is Rachel Podger's new recording of 'La Quattro Stagioni' by Vivaldi. Why yet another 'Four Seasons' ? The hoary old chestnut has been done to death by everyone who can pick up a violin.

But Rachel Podger isn't just anyone - she is a master (mistress?) of the Baroque stylings and her vital and unique playing brings a new purity and freshness to the concerto. With a minimal backing, authentic arrangements and the usual pristine recording of Channel Classics Jared Sachs this is a joy for all to hear.

Available on SACD and DSD / FLAC download. Wonderful.

Very nice LP. Was it you who was recommending the 'Arrival' soundtrack from the same composer? That too is wonderful. Since adding a sub to my 2 channel system this kind of music takes on a new life.

You've probably already listed to him but this puts me in mind of Ludovico Einaudi.

Discovering the 'Arrival' OST was my first exposure to Johannsson's music and there are a couple more albums from him that I'll try to track down.
Certainly my first thought was 'Sounds a bit like Ludovico Einaudi' with the opening mix of simplistic piano melodies and vague electronic colourings - but where Einaudi can get a bit romantically-inclined, Johannsson tends to veer off into Scandanavian bleakness.

My favourite from Einaudi is the experimental 'Divenire' album. Great for those long, still afternoons.

Also an interesting film with no main character - actually no human character & no dialogue - a goat, a tree, smoke....
You can interpert it in different ways.
