Specs and some classic Japlish:

Note how the main driver is run up to 1500 Hz!
and this bit: It was developed aiming at such a natural sound that it is not made conscious of a speaker.
That's why I like the Akais - you aren't aware that the sound is coming from the boxes - properly partnered and set up of course.

Only the one bottom left is a 'Broadcast' variant, which is the one to have. He says they all need new lasers - in other words none of them are working - and the odds of it being the laser at fault in all of them are less than it being the logic circuits or other components that are now irreplaceable without cannabilising another deck (and I don't even know if that is a practical possibility). if a CD player stops working folk always assume it is the laser when at least half the time it isn't. I had a laser change on a Sony once, still faulty, turned out the problem was a tiny ribbon connector that had gone bad.

Re: Worth a punt.
Back to your speakers Macca, what you should take into account is your Akai don't have ports. IMO opinion this is important to get the tight presentation you have. I would always look for these big old Jap speakers without a port.
Re: Worth a punt.
Agreed. I'm not a fan of ports either. Although they can work pretty well as on the Celestion A2 I used to have. I really want another pair of the Akais so can cannabilize the drivers to make super-speakers. I think it might work.

Well good luck they are like hens teeth. If you just want the drivers then try to buy them in the USA where they come up much more often and get them to just ship you the drivers and throw away the cabinets.

Re: Worth a punt.
These were absolute shite when new and totally outclassed in colouration terms by the UK made biggies that could still be got back then. I did hear them to get this view, by the way! The techie designers just couldn't understand how such an expensively and carefully made creation could sound so awful - true story.
