Something strange going on with that EMT 950 mat in Jammy's photo.jammy395 wrote:The King of UGLY.
Note the strange pattern on the mat - this is to hypnotise you once spinning into thinking it's gorgeous..!!
They look better with the flap on to cover up the circuit boards:
They will look ugly to many people. Its form following function. They were industrial machines, not consumer goods.
The beauty of EMT's is under the skin, for anyone with an appreciation of electro-mechanical engineering. They make Garrards and Linns and Technics 1210's look undersized / under-engineered / built down to a cost when you look under the bonnet.
Here's a photo of the EMT 950 motor (on the right) next to an EMT 928 motor:

As usual with hi-fi - when it comes to turntables it all depends where your priorities lie when it comes to what's best for you. EMT's are best for someone who wants a tweak free, fuss free, well engineered, ergonomic turntable and is willing to invest a considerable sum in buying them and isn't bothered by the external looks. Techie 1210's are for people who want something less expensive to buy, that look OK and sound decent with the opportunity to tweak and modify them if they wish. There are also loads of other worthy direct drive TT's apart from the EMT's and Technics.

I wonder if Pinky can work out why he is being considered a PT shill and yet you aren't.

I knew the SL1200 would find it's niche!
Audio Grail "Sable" Garrard 401 with Cumbrian Green Slate plinth / Audiomods 6 / Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC, Parasound JC3+, NVA INT400sa. (Oh and a Copland CDA823 CD Player, for when I fancy a bit of the devil's spawn!)
