If you can afford one then the LO7D is the obvious one.

Or if you don't mind importing from Japan and have *lots* of money then a Pioneer P3a.

There are dozens of other worthy dd tt's. It's all down to what you see a good deal on first. Anything that was at or near the top of the range from a Japanese manufacturer in the 1970's to 1980's.

I also think that once you get to a certain level of tt - of the calibre of the kenwood L07D / Pioneer Exclusives / Sony PSX9 - that the arm / cartridge / phono amp becomes more important for overall sound quality.

Did you know that the Trio / Kenwood L07D cost 380,000 yen in 1979 and 450,000 in 1982?
Whilst the Pioneer Exclusive P3a cost 650,000 yen in 1983.
The Denon DP-75M cost 180,000 yen in 1981.
Not that these prices tell you anything about how they sound, but it is interesting to see what sort of market segment they were in when they were new.

My entry to this area was a Trio/Kenwood KD550. I think that that needs a bit of work to get it better - surface noise is a problem. Whilst pondering how to tackle that, Jerry's PL71 became available. So far, I'm very pleased with that: it's putting new life (music) into tmy vinyl collection ( see other posts).

I have got a spare cover for the PL71 I had made if you want it, as that one at AoS has a damaged cover.

Nice one. :)

If he'd been willing to send it I'd have bought it myself. My SL1210's going to be up for sale soon but it wouldn't hold a candle (in its present, relatively standard state) to a '71.

Well when he passes it on he can leave it with me for you to collect or me to deliver when we can.

It looks like he can afford and is looking for something to make us all very jealous Image Image
