Re: My hifi is a disaster 1 problem at a time .
Ah! the pleasures of a holiday with the British When I go to Spain I go for a holiday with the Spanish, or basically any people apart from Russians, even Germans are not as bad as they used to be. So Nadia spends her time avoiding Russians and I spend it avoiding the Brits
BUT even worse would probably be somewhere you loved and the kids hated, then THEY would make your life a misery.

Re: My hifi is a disaster 1 problem at a time .
Okay . After my holiday , my thoughts turn to a new cartridge . I am fixed on low output moving coil and probably another benz , but my mind is wondering and whilst I am a long way from becoming a protégé of pfm's Mr Serge , I am inclined to give credence to specifications in cartridges as it appears to me they are all principally the same design , cantivlever, dimond ,copper wrapped round and iron magnet core [ yes I know exotic cartriges have special magnents and silver , gold windings ] So similar specification should sound the same
below are two low output moving coils specifications
Type Moving Coil (Dynamic)/REAL STEREO Generator System
Output Voltage 0.24mV [3.54cm/sec., 1kHz]
Frequency Response 10Hz ~ 75kHz
+/-1dB 20Hz ~ 20kHz
Channel Separation > 30dB (1kHz)
Channel Balance < 0.5dB [1kHz]
Recommended Tracking Force 1.8gm [20 ~ 25 degrees Celsius)
Tracking Force Range 1.5gm ~ 2.0gm
Compliance horizontal (vertical) 15x10-6cm/dyne (12x10-6cm/dyne)
Trackability > 80um/1.8gm
Internal Impedance 4 ohms (H = 8 ohms)
Recommended Load Impedance > 100 ohms
Cantilever Material . Boron rod 0.3mm dia.
Stylus Microridge Solid Diamond
Contact Radius 6um x 35um
Output Terminals 1.25mm dia. gold plated [EIA}
Net Weight 4.2gm
-------------
Specifications:
Output Voltage: 0.4mV
Cantilever: Solid Boron, 0.28mm
Stylus: Nude line-contact diamond, mirror polished
Stylus tip radius: 6x40 um
VTA: 20 degrees
Coil: Pure Iron Cross
Weight: 8.8 grams
Internal Impedance: 12ohms
Frequency Response: 20-20,000 Hz
Channel Balance: Better than 0.5db
Channel Separation: Better than 35db at 1kHz
Tracking force: 1.8-2 grams
Recommended loading: 200-47,000 ohms
----------------------
they are remarkably similar expect one as lower output , thus is it reasonable to expect them to sound the same ?

Re: My hifi is a disaster 1 problem at a time .
I have an Ortofon MC10
Specifications
Weight: 7g
Output voltage: 0.1mV
Internal resistance: 3 ohms
Tracking angle: 20 degrees
Frequency response: 10 to 20,000Hz
Channel separation: >22dB
Channel balance: <2dB
Stylus: elliptical 18/8 um
Tip mass: 0.5mg
Tracking force: 2.0g (1.7 to 2.3g)
That is surplus to requirements and is only worth about £20, so seeing as I nicked the 401 off you you can have it for P@P call it £5.

Re: My hifi is a disaster 1 problem at a time .
That's a very kind offer which I will take you up on ,It will at least let me listen to music whilst I ponder my next purchase and buy a pram , a cot and plethora of clothes which "must be in the bloody house before any bleeding microscopic dimond" :D
I did have a mc30 some years ago and liked that .
I will pm you my address , how do I pay .
Additionally, as you have let it go on the cheap , once I in possession of a new cartridge [ assuming the mc10 is not a keeper ] I will return or pass on to any other similarly afflicted forum member .

Why! I have just taken it off it took 1 min.
As cack handed as you are I would change to headshell arm.

oHHHH
I misunderstood , I thought it was fixed to the headshell , in my defence , I remember you saying some time ago that you preferred detachable headshells for quick changes and you glued the cartridge to the headshell .
pm sent

It was glued, but a use a rubberised glue which is easy to release.
