Is it any good, or just another rehash? I've lost count of the times reviewers have said that album x is a return to form, only to think it's ok, but not great.
OK but not great. Gillan' s voice was shot decades ago but has not got worse.

It's Cocteau Twins week here at Fretless Manor.

Image

'Head Over Heels' (1983)

I had forgotten what a great album this is. Moving forward from the Post-punk assault of 'Garlands' here Liz Frazer and Robin Guthrie explore more melodic textures with their power-ethereal approach.

:romance-cloud9:

Trivia time: the Cocteau Twins took their name from an early Simple Minds song.

More Cocteau Twins: I dismissed 'Heaven or Las Vegas' as a tacky, commercial sellout when it was released in 1990. The intervening decades have made me more open-minded and less judgemental (I hope) and now I can see why people fall in love with this record.

A gloriously warm and enveloping sound with a comforting easiness. Recording and production are quite phenomenal.

New Order 'Movement' (1981)

Image

The sound of sorrow. After Ian Curtis tragically ended his own life on the eve of Joy Division's first US tour, the remaining trio went back into the studio with erratic genius Martin Hannett and made an album.

Movement has the sound of a band hungry to create but still in mourning. The enormous gap left by Curtis is tangible here. It is still Joy Division in essence; a wake, 'closure'.

A monument to a monument.
