Killing Joke 'Democracy' (1996)

Killing joke's last album before going on a 7-year hiatus to re-emerge in 2003, 'Democracy' throttles back somewhat from the high-energy 'Pandemonum' and you could accuse the band of sounding tired - but not worn-out. There is enough to enjoy as they pull out their more melodic side (which for KJ is still pretty damn heavy) and the trademark fire and passion is very much in evidence.

This album can very much be seen as a direct descendant of 'Night Time' rather than the intense, uncompromising Industrial Metal that would dominate the next couple of albums (KJ 2003 & 'Hosannas From the Basement of Hell'). 'Democracy' is simply a good Killing Joke record and one of the more accessible entries in their catalogue.

But you do need to be in the right mood ....

Kuunatic – Gate Of Klüna

A rather mesmerising work from 3 young Japanese ladies who come from different parts of the country, each with distinct cultural and musical traditions. "Their music explores ritual drumming, pulsing bass lines, atmospheric keyboard sounds and Japanese traditional instruments."

I saw them on Monday night (hence the signed inner gatefold) - the first show of the new tour. Highly recommended if they are playing near you.
They are in Coventry tonight (The Tin At The Coal Vaults), London tomorrow (Shacklewell Arms), Brighton on Friday (The Green Door Store), then at WOMAD in Malmesbury at the weekend.

Slowdive 'Original Album Classics'

Having left the UK in the early 90's there are a lot of Britpop / Shoegaze artists that I have missed out on and Slowdive is a band I've not been exposed to before.

This set has the 3 albums from their first incarnation: 'Just For a Day' (91), 'Souvlaki' (93) & 'Pygmalion' (95).

Soaring Dreampop, guitars drenched in reverb and wistful vocals. There is a big Cocteau Twins influence here.
