Re: Your last listen
Camel - The Single Factor
Camelogue (Camel)
Camel - Heroes
No easy answer - Camel
Otherwise known to Camel fans as: 'The one we love to hate'.
Perhaps an unfair judgement - times had been hard for band-leader Andy Latimer, he had been unable to continue with sparring-partner Pete Bardens, internal tensions whilst touring had forced the departure of bass-maestro Richard Sinclair and drummer Andy Ward was an alcoholic wreck who had attempted suicide. Maybe it was time for a solo album to work things out of the system.
Getting into a studio with an all-star line up which included Dave Mattacks, Simon Phillips, Francis Monkman, Anthony Phillips and David Paton under the careful eyes of producer Haydn Bendall things started to roll.
Annoyingly though, the label bosses at Decca were demanding a hit single and Andy L was restricted to doing mostly short, sharp 'songs' with only a couple of instrumental workouts to recover past glories. High-point is the steaming track 'Sasquatch' which is pure magic and became a live favourite.
Returning to this album with an open mind reveals its charms with great playing by a team of experienced, dedicated musicians.
PS: The album title is a play on words - Andy Latimer was the single remaining band member and he was feeling very pressured to churn out singles.
PPS: "Andy Ward does not appear on this album following a serious injury to his hand."

Re: Your last listen
Lovely, intimate recording; nothing like Beecham's 'skeletons copulating on a tin roof' here. Unless you hate harpsichords, then it's exactly that. Brilliant performance, though, and exceptionally recorded.
Few choice quotes from the sleeve notes - written by Egarr - below, because they're amusing:
"It [the music] is full of harmonic, melodic and textural twists, oddities, and eccentricities that are deeply and uniquely rooted in a land that seems to specialise in the zany - The Goons, Monty Python and Ricky Gervais."
"... heart-breaking depths and earthy 'fish-slapping' humour."
"... surely Purcell would deserve Death by Chocolate rather than by the English weather?"
"Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art." ~ Frederic Chopin

Beautiful. I have purchased several of the Harmonia Mundi releases this past year or so...

Re: Your last listen
They really are one of the few high profile classical labels still churning out high quality recordings of emerging and current artists who are not necessarily the pop-star-Lang-Lang-Classic-FM-Raymond-Gubbay-presents-Albert-Hall-Spectacular types.
Totally understand investment in the catalogue. But then i would say that, because i was once their sales rep for UK south!
I really love the company and miss walking through the stock room musing at discs - they actually also act as a distributer for other minor labels in the UK and had a huuuge back-catalogue of interesting and historic recordings. They also owned the World Village label. Long may they continue...
