Re: Help! Digital Numpty

Not sure if this is the thread but am defiantly in the numpty camp.
Still confused about the nuts and bolts of whole digital thing I decided to follow the RPi crowd and ordered a RPi 2b, hifiberry digi+ with gavonic separation and a little box to put it in.

From what I've read I will need a power supply, some memory, spdif coax and volumio.

Is this a good starting point? will it make sense when it arrives ?

I hope so, any tips would be appreciated....

Just read the back posts, you have taken on a *hobby* which is why I wont entertain it *yet*. It seem to be work in progress, but if you like fiddling, best of luck.

My own fumbling acquaintance with the Pi is in the thread 'Life of Pi', and Terry has been working extensively with them.

Assembling the thing is easy. Getting it going should be pretty straightforward. Any trouble, just shout here and one of the gang will be around to help.

Shopping list is correct: SP/DIF cable to DAC. MicroSD card with Volumio installed on it. Power supply -start with a 5V/2A wall-wart. And connect to your network via Ethernet cable.

Have fun.

You will also need to control it with something. You can put a usb keyboard and mouse and a screen fed by an HDMI cable onto the Pi itself. Which is the only option if you do not have any network in the home.
You'll also need somewhere to store your music. Basic choices are a USB disk (which will probably need a powered usb hub to run) or some sort of network storage.

However, you can get started by storing music on the memory card you install Volumio on. 8gb Micro SD I would say is minimum. Volumio 1.55 (current) is less than 2gb, so there's room to play with there.

Anyway one step at a time.

There are more than Fretless and I on this forum who have gone down the Raspberry Pi route, so I'm sure you'll get the advise you need (and a lot you don't  ).

I've been looking at the volumio blog and it looks like I can enter Spotify log in and it takes over, apparently, with fantastic results.

Lets see.

I have just installed a plug in network solution by solwise so guess I can access via that.

That's will work so long as things are on the same ring or radial mains.

USB Keyboard and mouse and an HDMI monitor. But...what you need is an ethernet cable for the Pi. With volumio running on a local wired network (there's no wifi adapter in the basic Pi/Hifiberry package), you should be able to get the the Volumio web interface by going to volumio.local in a browser on another computer. Even with a wifi adapter, you will need to do that to configure a wifi network. (All this assuming that you've created a good image on the SD card).

It's handy if you know how to access the DHCP settings on your network wifi router - from that you can tell if you've got it working on the network (by default, it will have the name Volumio) and from that what IP address it has. You can access it using the IP address from a browser and from various utility programs - but you really shouldn't need to use anything else other than for troubleshooting.

Did you get anywhere, Phlakaton?

A Pi B+ takes a minute or two to start up and I assume you have an ethernet cable plugged in and that you used the diskinstaller program to set up your SD card. Then if you type;

volumio.local/

into your web browser as a web address it should connect automatically.

Afterthought; see if you have the program 'Bonjour' from Apple installed on your PC, that is sometimes necessary. It helps different devices to find each other in a network.

Edit: there is a link to the Bonjour setup on the Volumio.org 'Get Started' page under 'Connect to it'.

Keep trying - you'll get there!
