It was just an extension of your ideas (I think). The signal and 0V wires inside the equipment do not run next to each other and they don't in the speakers or speaker cables either. In fact we deliberately space them apart to reduce capacitive coupling. Confused of North Yorkshire. There is obviously something I am not understanding here- the long lengths of interconnects and small signal levels maybe.

Your thinking too much, listen to some music. There is a perfectly good reason why the cables are the way they are. But do what you want, just remember that smoke costs money.
