Bruford 'The Bruford Tapes' (1979)
An 'Official Bootleg' taken from a radio broadcast made at a concert in a New York Jazz-club. Guitarist Allan Holdsworth had left to concentrate on his solo career and had been replaced by the 'Unknown' John Clarke, who fills the quite considerable gap in a supremely accomplished way. Not easy when you look at the rest of the lineup: Bill B himself (Yes, King Crimson, Genesis etc. etc. etc.), Dave Stewart (Hatfield & the North, National Health and most of the 'Canterbury Scene') and lightning-speed-bass-guru Jeff Berlin.
Bruford - the band - formed when BB and AH left UK, after disagreeing with John Wetton and Eddie Jobson who wanted to move in a more commercial 'Rock' direction that would eventually become the supergroup Asia. UK itself had been an attempt to continue King Crimson (hence the name 'United Kingdom') with, initially, Rick Wakeman being called in to replace the departed Robert Fripp in an ELP-style setting with Wetton and Bruford.
By the time of 'The Bruford Tapes' the group had gelled into a hard-rocking outfit that could play the most complex passages with power and ease. The recording might not be of the highest quality but the playing and energy certainly is and the enthusiastic crowd drives the musicians to incandescent heights.
