Tom Robinson Band - Blue Murder
About the killing of Liddle.

I will check Tom Robinson's out also. I'm a big fan of his 6 music radio shows over the years. I believe he was one of the early Jocks that helped to set the stations (Indie) dirrction.

There is a great anthology (3CD+DVD) of all TRB's recordings.

Saw TRB in 1978 supported by Stiff Little Fingers. I looked a bit out of place with my long hair. Getting a bit like that now with lockdown . They were bands I liked and it was a good gig. Saw TRB again in 2017 playing the old stuff. The tickets were a good retirementj present.

Talking about Electrics and Women…One of the best fivers I spent in HMV, before it closed along with all the music shops in my area was ELO’s The Very Best Of – ‘All Around the World.’ 20 tracks of whack!, everyone a singalong. It’s an, in-Car CD and has helped the long commute over the past few years.

I never really got into Jeff Lynn’s production of the Beatles’ ‘Free as a Bird,’ & ‘Real Love’, they sounded too ELO tinged, but kept within his own back yard, he seems to be incapable of creating a bad sound.

I have heard a couple of his later releases, over the past couple of years and they are not to bad at all. He is on my ‘’to listen to’’ list, at some point and maybe one day, I will revisit his other productions – Harrison, McCartney, Orbison etc., but in the past, I have not been keen on the sound. Don’t get me wrong here, I don’t dislike his ELO sound, I think every ELO song is a mini masterpiece of perfect pop. He is a very clever bloke.

Good point about Jeff Lynne's production work for others - he has such a specific trademark character that everyone ends up sounding like ELO.

The Old Skool bag.

Before I had a musical clue, there were some lads at school, who’s satchels were adorned with colourful artwork of band’s names of which I had never heard; Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Led Zep, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, rainbow, Motorhead. I was intrigued and wanted to find out more. But before I could, the names went almost overnight as Punk Rock happened and It was a few years later before I heard the likes of -

Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath - From their first album

The opening, rather good, subliminal track on side 1. Everything was downhill from here. A song spawning many Rock tracks since it’s 1970 prom. Cronos of Heavy Rock. For me it’s about as good as a Heavy Rock track as there is. (Not that I know very many at all!)


1 – Hush – Deep Purple. From their first album.

I only know a couple of Deep Purple songs and I like this cover version best out of the two. The keyboard is major here, and with the Bass, really bounces the song along. And the good thing about the vocalist’s style – he doesn’t sound too ‘’heavy ’’


2 – Ramble on – Led Zeppelin. From their II album –

I like their bluesy numbers and their first two albums, but ‘Ramble On’ is a hint towards a different direction, away from their heavy R&B cover style. Perhaps a third album following the same vein, may have sank like a Led Balloon.

Incidentally, I went to see The Honey Drippers in May or June 1981 at Stafford Polytechnic. It was the original line up, Just Robert Plant of any fame. But I can’t find any information about the gig anywhere online. It’s as if it didn’t happen?

3 before bedtime tonight –

1977 –3 seasons in one day.

Sources were limited for hearing the latest music when I was a teenager and in 1977(my 15th year) my only 2 options were, TOTP and the Radio1 chart countdown. A musical direction had to formed from minimal outlets. With some 1977 punk records being banned, I sort of missed them until 1978. What I did hear in ‘77, primed my interest in a less 'poppy' type of music. Although now, I realise, It’s all just pop music anyway and nothing to get too snotty about!


Roadrunner – Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers -

I Heard this song lots on the radio in Summer ’77 and have a fading memory of seeing it on TOTP? Derived from the Velvet’s ‘’Sister Ray’’ and produced by John Cale (read on t’internet). Not Punk I know but it fits that late ’77 feel. The song was one of the first to point me in a musical direction away from standard chart music. It has been covered by many Punk Bands thereafter. It has a great B side ‘‘Pablo Picasso’’ (Bowie does respectable version, but I much prefer the original). It could have been a double ‘A’ side, such is the standard. A classic still heard on Radio today. Jonathan Richman recently hit my ‘’to listen to’’ list.


Black Betty – Ram Jam -

American rock band’s re-working of an attributed Led Belly recording, (although he was not the originator) A UK top ten, one hit wonder in Autumn ‘77. What is a Black Betty? A bottle of whisky? A musket? (Brown Bess wouldn’t have quite the same impact), Not punk I know, but it had the markings of a good Punky sound and was briefly adopted whilst on the road to discovering new music. It still reminds me of the late ’77 feel that I had whilst growing up, watching TOTP and listening to Radio1’s top 40 on a Sunday evening.

Really Free – John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett –

A Sound breaking song I discovered whilst watching TOTP one Thursday evening at Seven O clock, in Winter late ‘77. The talk of the playground the next day. Most though it was rubbish, I thought it was great! Not Punk I know (Eccentric Prock?), but quite happily gained a spring off the back of the Punk label and scraped a top 30 hit. I only have 2 of his LPs, but the best way to enjoy John Otway is to see him live. You can see him on a weekly basis doing Facebook live concerts, ‘’…Cor baby that’s really free…’’, making a success out of disaster, as he says. (Btw, I have never seen him live, yet)
