Vangelis 'Beaubourg' (2013 remaster)

A work that has always fascinated me, partially due to its sheer impenetrability - like 'what the hell was he thinking?'
The new mastering helps enormously in comprehending Vangelis's intentions here. On the one hand this was his last album for RCA, contractual obligations completed and time for new pastures. So he wasn't going to give them anything commercial, and 'Beaubourg' definitely isn't anything commercial. Secondly, he really wanted to do something seriously experimental and this was the chance.
For the casual listener, this is a mess of synthesised sounds and doodlings with no sign of a melody to get your teeth into. Textures and moods and all rather unsettling.
Finally - the remaster, which I had hoped for for years, and this strangely timeless music flows through the speakers with a rich sonority that allows you to appreciate that this is the work of someone wanting to be compared to the 20th century classical composers like Ligeti, Lutoslawski and Stockhausen. An experimental style that he repeated later on 'Invisible Connections' which was released on the renowned Deutsche Gramofon classical label.
Fascinating, intriguing and, at long last, enjoyable.
