That Morocco match. I thoroughly enjoyed it, including the 25 minutes in the 2nd half when I was asleep.

Let's see if
Morocco
Netherlands
Croatia
can provide more laugh out loud entertainment this week-end...

Top class comedy entertainment.

It was always going to happen. I have tried to explain to my 12 year old boy that eventually you stop thinking England can actually be any good at football. Once you have accepted there is no exceptionally, only laziness, then things become much easier to understand. God bless this fine, upstanding country.

Bit unlucky. Fine margins. Jumpers for goalposts.

England are good at football. At club level. Where English clubs win more than their fair share of European competitions.

For World Cups, England have a long standing tradition of exiting at the quarter final stage on missed penalties.
In 2018 that tradition was broken due to the draw opening up into a once in a lifetime easy opposition to get England to the semis.

It made me smile when I read about England players saying that they believed this time England would win the World Cup. That belief was not in evidence in the first half against France. It's easy to say you're confident. Less easy to be confident when under pressure.
It would have been better to say "We'll give it our best shot and see what happens." And to apply that attitude.

England are good at limited overs cricket. World champions at 50 and 20 overs.

Professional football is only a bunch of extremely highly paid athletes kicking a ball around. When the most upsetting thing in someone's life is the result of a football match, that's an indication that everything important is OK in their life.

I'd say that England are progressing pretty well as a team. The last two tournaments were semi-final and final, but last night was (ironically) one the best performances of all. They went toe-to-toe with the world champions and it could easily have gone the other way. I think France were very relieved to get past England. Possibly just a little more experience (and a dose of fortune) got France over the line. Most of this England squad are young enough to be around for at least the next two major tournaments, and Southgate seems well suited to the job. Plenty of reasons for optimism.

Until the last 5 or 6 years, England were pretty mediocre, most of the time, at one day cricket.

Success in sport tends to come in cycles.

Mid 70's to 80's, Liverpool were top dogs. Then they won almost nothing during the Fergie Man Utd years. Man City are top of the pile now. Who knows who will be the top club side in 2032?

West Indies used to be the top cricket team. Look at them now.

All those cycles happen for a reason.
