I guess she was one of the first examples I knew of someone who was 'famous for being famous'; ie hadn't actually done much apart from marrying several times, yet seemed to be always on some TV show or other.

See, she was a singer. Her voice is easily as musical as Billy Bragg's or Bob Dylan's, although I'll grant you they're almost certainly better songwriters.
