My own listening tells me that the input switch offers next to nothing in the way of the signal, so connect the CD/DAC to one input and the phono stage to the other and PLEASE don't worry about the 'Direct' input for now.

It is one of the "it depends" jobbies. On the pro stack the difference is very clear, it is just more dirt removed from the window. Pre-amps I use in my test system, and I have two, are a partially built P50 with just a single input and single output, and a TCS with one input and three outputs. So both operate the same as a direct. If I want to change source then I just unplug and plug. But for me it is easy as I don't use a daft rack  Poking and pulling around each time cussing and swearing as you can't see it properly behind a rack is not a good idea, but there again racks are a bloody daft idea.

Sorry to revive an old threat, but I need some advice here:

Been looking for a new setup for my newly acquired used Shahinian LARCs
I am considering Hegal H80 with build-in DAC which seems to have many great reviews, and I can partially fund this by selling my Chord 2Qute which I recently bought from Nintronics

But I still miss my good old days with NVA A60 which the movers damaged it few years back.

So one alternative is to get a NVA AP50 or P20+A40s, but that would mean I need to keep the Chord 2Qute plus spending quite a bit more on lots of cables.............. and this will cost me approx £850

Part of me tells me that the NVA+2Qute will be a better option in terms of sound quality, but the additional cost will be quite a stretch for me.
But if Hegel will also bring me musical enjoyment, I may pick this and keep the NVA option for later when I feel more comfortable financially

I do not have any experience with Hegel so feedback from anyone with Hegel experience will be much appreciated

I have a 2Qute paired with a TCS, an A80 and statement cables. I never felt that the source is weak. I started to change my setup with the streamer and the dac, then changed the cables and the power amp, then the speakers, and the last step was the pre. The dac and the streamer didn't make a revolution, but every change after was a clear step up. I'd keep the dac and buy the best possible amp.

I did change the Hegel DAC I had for the Metrum Musette. The Hegel sound was powerful but somehow slightly veiled and lacking involvement.

Main reason I got the Hegel was native DSD playback, which I never used. Also it didn't really work with the NVA amps when I used it to drive them directly without a preamp.

Many users of Chord DAC's praise the SQ, so I would go with the NVA upgrade for now.

I would keep the Chord DAC and spend the money on NVA kit. IMO Chord DACs have the same sound signature and are transparent and dynamic with NVA kit. I upgraded from the Mojo to the Qutest, retaining the former for head phone use.
