On that basis I have tried a few of things I would never have known about without this forum, most have helped the music, as for those that didn't, I knew it was a possibility, so no worries their.

I have found HFS to be an invaluable source of information and advice, althogh I do not concur with everything posted. What distinguishes this forum from some others is the lack of agendas and things are not forced down your throat. At the end of the day it is your ears in your listening room and if you like it it is good. This applies to music, which it is all about, as well as equipment. Some bands to my liking which I had not heard of have been brought to my attention.
In contrast some forums are a mine field for prespective purchasers seeking honest advice. The you scratch my back and tag team synderoms are all to prevelant and the unwary can be conned out of a lot of money. A flashy four leggged tag team has won a number of submissions and a knock out.

Their forum says "A drop of sense in an ocean of nonsense"
Don't know about you but I am going to hang out there straight away. Life is too short for putting up with all this nonsense on lesser forums.

I had a look once and found Keith from Purite Audio and Serge post their so I tried to cleanse my mind the best I could. It took a look at AOS to do that (no, not the 3 word daily thread)..

The knock out I referred to in my previous post was Purite Audio. He gave his reason for leaving WAM on ASR and it was the tag team, shilling a 1.5K 1M cable containing ferrets, or ferrites.

It seems that the days when engineers designed amps, arms, speakers etc. for their own satisfaction and then found that a market existed for them are gone. Now, it appears, there are people out there whose whole purpose is to bring in maximum income for minimum outlay. Posh fuses, extravagant earthing systems, elaborate cables and mysterious boxes all readily available to the gullible, cloth eared, audiophile.
The old maxim “if it looks too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true” has been ignored in Hi-Fi circles for far too long. Though the third law of thermodynamics has taken over “you don’t get something for nothing” so junk is priced to make it look like “something” when in reality it is nothing.
I wonder how many “enthusiasts” there are who have never heard live music but presume to tell us how much their system sounds like the real thing?

In some ways it's true that subjects are almost perpetual but they do evolve. I have been fortunate, first time around there was no internet to "daze & confuse". I cannot recall how I came across Richard and NVA in 1992 but as a result the bulk of my original system was NVA apart from my LP12 and a Yamaha tape deck. When my interest was renewed and my aging equipment was in need of replacing I started on here and this forum is not only my go to forum but it has become the benchmark by which I judge others. The advice/help/goodwill on here has been wonderful and it's the reason I have what I consider to be a very rewarding system. And the DIY input has given me the confidence to get involved, so now all the cabling I have, I researched and made myself, speakers are 80% my work, plus a hand made mains conditioner and a dedicated earthing system. Other forums have helped but this remains my favourite and in the final analysis that's down to the contributor's

Hifi forums - or any online forum - will always be a reflection of the subject and the members involved.
Mainstream Audiophile hifi for many years has been a combination of bling / pride of ownership; bragging rights; being part of a cult / club and finally sound quality / music. Unfortunately in recent years the rise of online has led to an increase in shilling via fora which has coincided with the shrinking of the market for traditional “Hifi”.
The experienced can see through most of this and filter out the chaff as one previous poster said - you can of course take it or leave it.
Overall, as someone with an interest in music (both recorded and modest attempts to try and create it) I do have an interest in the technology involved in the process. So Hifi forums can serve their purpose of informing and some times entertaining but the filters need to be applied. I for one will always take a look.......
