I already suggested "cable picking up something is more likely." As all others scenarios are way more unlikely as I explained previously.
Unfortunately i cannot offer you anything else without actually testing cables myself.

Let me know when you are in UK and where the new business is operating and I will send them to you. I think they are going to be surplus in future but I won't sell them unless 100% sure they are up to spec. I don't need them at the moment so it can wait to a convenient time. BTW they are approx twelve months old and identical to the cables I bought about 3 or 4 months ago. I don't disagree with your analysis but why shorter identical cables don't have the same problem is a bit of a mystery.
