NVA amps do rather well in tunedem parameters...

The brain washing reached the extent that we were lead to believe that the LP 12, then £340 without arm and cartfidge, partnersd with a £90 amplifier and a £65 pair of speakers was isonically superior to a cheaper deck with an expensive amplifier and speakers. I put this to the test when I auditioned the LP 12 fronting recommended low cost components. Through the system it was in no way superior to a Rega Planar 3, with arm, costing £135. I was not the only one at the demonstration to come to this conclusion. The salesman said it was down to the records I brought with me.

Not long after this I gave up on hifi magazines realising that Ivor had the journalists in his pocket, or was lining their products. Popular HiFi was the worst offender for recommending the inclusion of a LP 12 in a £500 system. The editor Chris Franklin was bent and would do time for tax evasion.

Indeed. NVA amps also do focus and clarity well.

Part of the joke is that the LP12 doesn't do well at the tunedem thing when compared against many TT's - especially when the dog saunters past the thing wobble, wobble, wobble

Me again DQ? Not sure what age has to do with it to be honest. I did this comparison so many times in different venues and with different pairs of arms and cartridges the difference was real and repeatable. The LP12 actually pulled further and further ahead as it's development progressed too and rather than compare a mere Planar 3 to a current Majik LP12, you need to go to a Planar 8 at least, which you've carefully sited beforehand...

I don't know why we're having this discussion really. The tune-dem was and still is always easy for me and it was the main reason why I liked the slightly too-creamy 'musicality' of the smaller NVA amps over other commercial alternatives at the price, which tended to go for snap and detail at the expense of the melodic nature in the recordings.

On the other hand, I remember being totally nonplussed when a friend and then employee at Grahams HiFi tried to 'sell me' an Arcam Delta 60 amp once, which was all superficial clarity, snap and pr@t but totally tuneless to my ears... Not an amp I could live with for very long then or now.

Not too difficult? It's all relative and depends what standards you set.
