That’s the sand and cement bought and a couple of bits to make the moulds. I’m going with casting each panel separately then using an epoxy of some sort to bond. All the edges will have a mitre on them so they should fit together nicely... I hope!

Will do! It will probably be next weekend before I get to start casting as this time of the year is when we start getting really busy at work. I will try to make this thread as comprehensive as I can!

Ithilstone wrote: Sat Mar 30, 2019 11:43 am Why concrete? can you make them in wood make them an 1-1.5 inch bigger in all dimensions - then cut holes and fit some spacers - then pour 1 to 1,5 in concrete one side at the time and let it settle. Turn to another side and pour some more - after you are done remove the wood - you will be left with perfect concrete cube
All sounds so easy doesn't it.
The theory is sound enough but the problems come when you try and dismantle the "formwork". The outside is easy enough but getting the internal box out afterwards will be a complete bastard. Cement sticks like shit to a blanket and the first movement of the form must be away from the surface of the concrete. The internal panels have to be split down the middle and strapped together so they can be released and stripped out once cast. I would suggest using a laminate to face the timber as it gives a smooth finish and sticks less to the surface. Definitely not easy.

Use Granite. see a tombstone mason and get it drilled and even engraved, then us slow setting two pack glue.
I love the Morocco Blue Stone.
When it is first cut the granite is soft and harden over time.
And you will have the glitter look and much heavier than concrete.
I suggest you got to weight training classes first.

Things that heavy should be put on casters, because of the weight it doesn't compromise the transmission to the floor.

Colin it hadn’t even crossed my mind to speak to a stonemason. I’m sure there will be a couple local to me who I can speak to.

Doc I think they would have to be on casters regardless if I’m to stand any chance of moving them so it’s good to know that doing so won’t compromise them.
