I too have settled on very heavyweight steel stands, but I use Michell Tenderfeet, (3 No), between the speaker and stand. I only used the Tenderfeet as they were the shortest spikes I could find and they are stuck to the top plate of the stands with double-sided tape. I found Blu-tack made the music sound "dead".

My Shahinian Obelisks are on castors and still sound fab. Here's a link to a photo of someones homemade copy of a Townsend stand http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread.ph ... orts/page2. I guess there's many ways to skin a cat. :-?

So the new stands arrived today. I managed to find out where the Doc got his from and had them make me some. I have filled each stand with one tub of Atacama Attabites and they are on spikes. Pretty happy TBH.

And in place. The next step is to get a proper rack.

So long as it's not a HiFi rack, it'll be fine.

I am going to have some slate plinths made at a local stone masons to put under my stands. A couple of things I am not clear on:

1. Does the plinth go straight on the carpet or does it need spikes as well?
2. Do the speaker spikes need to sit in shoes, or do they go straight onto the slate?
3. Is there a general rule of thumb regarding how much larger the plinth should be than the stand base?

TIA.

My only question is why do it. Seems a lot of faff and expense.
