Some more pics of spheres with various support ideas. Now I don't have a down firing driver I have lots more possibilities. Playing Bob Marley for the Doc right now.
Two spheres on a 22cm length of 100mm drain pvc drain pipe with a 30cm sq sheet of 6mm aluminum
I then had a brain wave.
A shorter 14cm length of 110mm drain pipe on top of the basket of the old Marantz Imperial 7 12" bass driver
I think if that was cleaned up, painted and the wiring terminals removed then it would be ideal. I have been trying to at least use some part of the ebay give away speakers that started this saga off four years ago.
Another pic from lower down
The 12" woofer basket and magnet is 13cm high and the drain pipe is 14cm which makes a stand of 27cm height which is taller than I wanted so I need to try a smaller length of pipe. It could be filled with sand to weigh it all down, control resonance and lower the centre of gravity. Or if I ever go to the dark side (vented) then I have a ready made big fat port
I like this idea but I may be loosing the plot here. I would welcome any opinions on the above idea. I can still try the three wooden legs idea.

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
Found a little 7cm length of pipe so stand is now 20cm tall. Steel sphere is 30cm, plastic sphere is 15cm. Total height is 65cm (25.5").
From sat down on front of my armchair
Stood up in front of it
At the moment I like the speaker basket and short pipe version the best but I could happily live with the pipe and flat aluminum base or three splayed legs. It's hard to stage a three leg version without it collapsing. My wife's view may have a bearing on what happens here
Any views ?

Three little wooden legs. Try to blot out the pipe and driver in the middle which is holding it up. They would of course be round tapered legs if I go this way.

I admire your balancing skills.
Hmm, 3mm eh. I envisage a funky looking circle jig attached to an angle grinder with a thin cut-off disk perhaps? Best of luck, i'm slightly wary of my drop saw after using it to cut a heatsink which bound on the blade and ripped it out of my hand, severely lacerating one of my fingers.

The steel sphere sits in the hollow pipe real easy. Bit of trusty blutack under the plastic sphere. Piece of caker3xj0hn570n wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 7:51 pm I admire your balancing skills.

I know what you mean about it being dangerous, the object is usually clamped. I am thinking of ways to make it as safe as possible. Some way of clamping the hemisphere and being able to spin it is where my current thinking is heading.
I once had an angle grinder snag on something and it was ripped out of my hands. Went all the way up my arm but luckily I had a very thick jumper on.

Re: Doc modding Marantz imperial 7
I went back to the beginning of this thread and found the above quote by RD. Such a way with words. How I miss Doc. These speakers are a tribute to him. Funny how this journey has gone through lots of complicated multi driver contraptions and ended up almost where it started.Dr Bunsen Honeydew wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2017 7:02 pm
My reasoning is to get more speakers that actually show the qualities of amplifiers and not sitting on them and suppressing the music the way most of what we have to put up with does.
Modern speakers are bling crap largely, and sold with layers of bullshit all over them - Harbeth is a classic case. Just look at their ludicrous denial that amplifiers can sound different. The only important thing being the speaker, that is how they are getting away with it as decent amps will show them up for what they are. The IMPORTANT thing is speakers that show how good good amplifiers are, and the IMPORTANT thing is amplifiers that show how good the source components are, and the IMPORTANT thing is source components that show how good the music is.......
KISS - I seemed to forget this along the way but the journey led me back. Just needed a few refinements picked up from trying crazy ideas out. Most of them were crap of course and didn't work.
