Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
Good to know mate.
When the time comes I'll pass my amp on to an expert who does these things.
New Valves fitted when I got it, so hopefully not for a while.

Who too Ali? from what I am reading from him I wouldn't let him near my cat with a cold.
He seems to have started this scaremongering, and we get stupid statements like balanced mains is like balanced signal cable - not! and that his valve amps are safe because he ensures he has a chassis earth. Yes 999.9 times out of a thousand they are safe. The same as 999.9 time out of a thousand balanced mains are safe. The difference is the odd time it shorts to signal or your ring has lost its earth then it probably will kill you, where as with the balanced mains it can *ONLY* give you one leg at 120v ac and that will make you say "Ooo that tickles", that is the difference.

Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
Now the thread has taken on total idiot proportions.
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthre ... 85&page=23
I couldn't give a toss about Jerry anymore he has plenty of money to lose, but when you give credence to these people like Yomanze spouting idiocy what chance do normal members have of getting real information.

In this case by Yomanise it would seem, who is indeed talking a load o bloody bollocks....
A lot o folk taking the safety thing a bit too far IMHO.

Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
And there speaks an electrician. What people don't seem to realise that all balanced is is what is known as split rail. We were talking about it earlier with the tube, which has an offset split of +420v -210v. it is done on the tube to stop interaction and induced current with trackside metal and the metal walls of the tunnels. All my amps are balanced, they use a split rail power supply as do most amps, if they aren't they are either single ended or quasi complementary like old Naims.
It is the old hi-fi problem, non expert experts who just learn a few buzz words like balanced or single ended or class A without understanding ferk all about what they really mean but it gives them a means to exercise their face (fingers / keyboard). They used to populate bars in pubs and hold court, but now we get them on forums, and especially the forum owners as they can tell others to shut up

Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
See Jerry had a quick comparison between his AG1500 and the balanced supply?
Think he preferred the bps, except on his power amp.
Mines is coming tommorow, still having a think about how best to wire it up.
Hard wired is the way to go I think (even though its compromised ) but unsure if there's any milage in getting a foo mains cable to wire it up?
Have plenty of Lapp Offlex I was gonna use, but wondering if there's any milage in getting some thicker than 2.5mm core stuff with better shielding?
Something like this...
http://www.fscables.com/Power/Fixed+Wir ... d/list.htm
Or this (better because of double screening?)
http://www.jobarco.com/files/sheets_en/EMC-FLEX-e.pdf
Goes up to 6mm.
Only need a meter and a half or so.
Worth a punt you think Richard?
Or spend money on more wine and music?
Thanks.
Gaz.

Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
Better cable is better cable, but having no plug is better than better cable.
Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
Yup, Hard wired for sure.
Out of those two cables I linked to, any one look obviously better to you Richard?
Anything different you'd suggest?
Thinking better shielding is a good thing..thicker cable good too?
No harm in over-speccing if its not too costly I suppose...
thanks muchley,
Gaz.

Re: Scottish Mafia get together last weekend...
Most of what is sold as hi-fi screened mains cable is armoured cable not screened. Armoured cable is used where external forces could damage the cable.
This is what I use for Statement amps http://uk.farnell.com/pro-power/3183-1- ... tt=1333113 I really can't be bothered with anything else. I have a reel if you want a couple of metres.
