Thought of the day

"a scientist said that science is about curiosity
looking at things not yet understood
once its understood and proven, its no longer science
it then becomes engineering

curiosity is driving the world, and always have been
but also money, for sure
and a reason why very few like to explore things that no one wants to buy
a lot of good stuff is on hold because of that"

Reading too much diyaudio.com can be a dangerous thing  I have gathered some information from there of late but you need to be able to pick through the

1) incorrect information
2) bullshit
3) marketing from vendors
4) arguments between long standing opponents
5) willy waving
6) misinformation given purely to steer people in a certain direction (see no.3)
7) petty bitching

I have read very long threads where proponents on both sides of an argument have argued and argued sometimes for hundred's of pages and at the end of it you still don't know what the correct information is  Also have to pick through behaviour in the list above to varying degree's.

One such thread was about why omni speakers are not more popular. Something close to my heart (and others here) and i suppose i went to that thread with a bias. That is where i got that quote i posted a few posts back. Much of the anti omni comment was from technical guys who had not tried it and probably just quoted the theory and why they thought it would not be any good. It must be said that many of these guys actually design speakers and sell them.

Talk about entrenched views. What ever happened to open minds ? Money does indeed motivate everything to varying degrees, directly and indirectly.

:angry-fire:

Thetes nowt wrong with omnis. They arent my cup of tea for critical listening though. I guess the only thing you can really say against them is that music is almost always mixed for/on directional speakers so is likely to sounds closer to as intended on a similar setup.

Theres so much variation in rooms, reflection and reverb times from one hifi to the next though I guess omnis ate just as correct as anything else.

As long as the sounds reach the ear at the right time and at the right levels it's all just flavours innit. Music doesnt come from two sources in the real world does it?

I don't get that much time for critical listening. It's so anti social. One person in the hot spot, shush i'm trying to listen to Baldrick playing the triangle. I do get some time on my own so maybe i need a switch to turn off all the drivers except the ones firing forwards ? Hey that's not a bad idea

Are linn Isobarik's omni directional  Or multi directional or poly directional ?

Daniel Quinn wrote: Sat Nov 09, 2019 3:50 pm You got me all excited, till I realised it was a fancy name for nxt panels.

I've got some in my TV, they are not a patch on my speakers, so my excitement was quashed.
Much depends on (a) panel size, (b) panel material (c) exciter positioning (d) panel suspension. My panels run from 300hz upwards and are 560 x 400mm approx. The panels are 3mm poplar ply. The exciter is positioned using the Monacor recommendation. The panel suspension is elastically constrained but not firmly attached. The exciter is a single 25mm Dayton Audio unit per side.

Presentation similar to open baffle, but no front/rear wave cancellation. Imaging superior to semi-omni, but needs similar space to breathe as OB. Soundstage is very 2.5D, wide, high but not as deep as OB.
