Articles like that are a bit of fun. Not something to be taken seriously.
They are the equivalent to "Most beautiful woman in the world" articles where the winner is usually the woman that's been on TV the most in recent months that happens to be pretty good looking.

Other models that spring to mind (not necessarily good ones) include the Rogers Ravensbourne & Ravensbrook, the Armstrong 400, 500 & 600 series, and of course Leak (valve & tranny). Oh, and various Sugdens.

I still have a Rotel 840BX3. A surprisingly capable 'budget' amp. Out of those listed had the Audiolab 8000 (1988 vintage) for some years and found it lacked little. Reasonable phono stage and well made.

A guy who designed some of the Armstrong gear is very active on PFM (Jim Lesurf). Very knowledgeable and helpful guy.

An Armstrong 625 receiver was my second amp, although I was tempted by a Goodmans one ten receiver.

The Armstrong won because I preferred the look of it.

I used the Armstrong 625 receiver for a number of years until I found the NAD 3020 sounded better. The Amstrong was recommended by someone I was at Uni with who knew a bit about hifi. It was part of my first system with a Pioneer TT, Ortofon cartridge and Celestion Ditton 15XR speakers.

The Din sockets on the Armstrong were a negative. I am aware of the designer on PFM who certainly is knowledgeable. Have not been there much in the past eighteen months since I was banned.
