A gnome is a mythical small humanoid (see also leprechaun) whilst a dwarf is a small human.

In Gotho-German mythology (as well as the Scandinavian Sagas and Icelandic Elder Edda) diminutive beings called the race ofDuergar, "personifications of the subterraneous powers of nature" lived in rocks and hills and possessed skill in metalurgy. They work marvels of gold , silver and iron in their forges. Their created armour is unsurpassed.
According to the Edda, the Duergar became animated in the clay under the earth"like maggots in flesh" and took to life in Ymir's (Chaos') flesh
