Ha! Ha!

You must be kidding.

........
Anyways, if yer talking Weather Report, you must stipulate which period since they went thru serious ch-ch-ch-changes.

My beef is the pedestrian compositions, not the players. The players were top-notch. Christ - Pastorious, Milos are inviolable.

First you have the (extremely) boring acoustic phase. Sorta like Oregon. I cannot listen to that slow first lp.

When Pastorious comes in, on their most accessable lp, Heavy Weather, that is the Weather Report phase most know. I call it fusion-lite. Heavy Weather DOES actually have one decent track on it - think its the second on side one. (Its been a while)

And then we have the 8th studio lp, Mr Gone. This should have been called Mr BigHead. Jeez! Wot went wrong here.
Zwainul went overboard is wot. I like prog which means I like excess, but oftimes excess can be a bad thing. Evidence, Mr Gone.

Downbeat magazine (which praises most anything) gave this a single star and the band had to defend it.

Chanting, drones,Latin bullshit....only about 2 minutes gets lively.

Jaco, of course, shines but its not enough to pull the lp out of the Slough of Despond.

...and, let us not forget the obvious...

a fusion band WITHOUT an electric guitarist - without even acoustic guitarist!!!

That just don't cut the mustard, Jimmeh Creamcheese.

How's it supposed to rock?

How's it supposed to BITE.

Just wrap your ears around this:

Allan Holdsworth - Metal Fatigue (1985)

or this:

Bruford - Sample and Hold

And not forgetting this:

Pekka Pohjola - Mathematical Air Display

... and don't even mention Al Di Meola

I made a mistake a ways up: said "Milos" when , of course, I meant Miroslav Vitous.

Vitous is a superb bassist - and those early Weather Report albums are more ECM-style Nordic jazz and excellent in their own way.
