Commendations

Unread post by terrybooth »

Ok. let's see if there's any interest in this.

What I'd like is to hear you commendations for music and musicians. The more distinctive, the more local, the better. Two questions:

Who or what?

And Why?

So, here's my commendation.

Serious Sam Barrett

Why?
He's from Leeds and sings about Leeds.
He is completely do it yourself: production, promotion, recording, sleeve design, all of that. So I'd like to think that he's selling direct to a market without all of the market forces.
His sound is very direct and 'authentic'. There's a huge mix of americana in his music: country, zydeco, cajun, bluegrass: why I can even listen to banjo when he's playing!

Show of Hands - try the track Roots.

Try it on a big system with rhythmic zest - Real power and anger in an English folksy tradition. Foot stomping!

The Skalinskis. Sort of Ska/Two Tone. Sorry to say I know a few of these people ;) This is probably their most 'commercial offering', The King Tut Strut:

Very nice. It reminds me of Jan Garbarek's work with The Hilliard Ensemble.

I'm rather hoping that the next series of Happy Valley will feature his music rather than Jake Bugg.
