I bought my ZYX Fuji from Japan, no problems at all and £800 instead of £1500. But I guess a tiny little box slips through a bit easier.
(sorry that was in reply to sandman).
Audio Grail "Sable" Garrard 401 with Cumbrian Green Slate plinth / Audiomods 6 / Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC, Parasound JC3+, NVA INT400sa. (Oh and a Copland CDA823 CD Player, for when I fancy a bit of the devil's spawn!)
Although I voted for vinyl, I encountered a far better sound from CD today than I've heard previously. Sadly the DAC responsible for this wasn't mine. Nice to try in my system for a day though, and I won't forget it in a hurry.
'Twas a DPA PDM2 and it was leagues ahead of all the other DPAs I've listened to, plus it was tonally and sonically different in character. Very relaxed and spacious, yet far more "big" in terms of dynamics than I've come across from CD. If there's better out there, I don't think I want to hear it unless it comes with an affordable price tag.
Was it better than vinyl? It was still very different, so it's hard to say without longer exposure. From one day's experience, I think you'd have to go some to beat it with any source. It's not the newest DAC either, so I was pretty surprised. For me, it will make most other CDs sound unacceptable, yet it also shows that most shortcomings aren't inherent in the medium, as I previously thought.
