Last week (Friday 12th) we went to one of my favourite venues, the Brudenell club in Leeds.
It's difficult to encapsulate why this is such a special place but it is.
Dry Cleaning were the main "act_ with a group called Softness as the support. Softness who I had never heard of were good. Unfortunately Dry Cleanings sound check consisted of one of their support crew doing the obligatory but useless 1-2 noises into various mics.
It was no surprise then when they came on you couldn't make out a single word the singer was saying. Florence Shaw is something of a word smith and their tracks rely heavily on her delivery which on this occasion was ruined by the drums and bass guitar drowing her out.
I have been to hundreds of gigs over the past 52 years and to the best of my memory this is the first one I have walked out on one
Usually after one or two duff tracks someone on the mix desk makes the required adjustments but not on Friday, we probably got to the half way point before we concluded "enough is enough"
I can only think their modest support crew and manager were back stage during the set because the sound mix was bloody awful.
