Cabaret Voltaire 'Three Mantras' (1980)



Had this when it first came out. An EP with 2 tracks that both clock in at over 20 minutes. 'Western Mantra' has an insistent drum-machine behind typical Cabs menacing weirdness and 'Eastern Mantra' is a droning collage of middle-eastern voices, not dissimilar to 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts'.

Used to regard this as an impenetrable work but now find it rather relaxing. Make of that what you will

Just watching a recording from last night, “ Greatest Albums Live” on Sky arts.
Martin Fry doing ABC’s “The Lexicon of Love” at the London Palladium. It’s one of those albums that works even better live than it does on record.
Back in the day it was one of those slabs of vinyl that made your stereo system sound totally epic.

The potential for an absolute debacle is off the scale, but knowing Stuart Maconie and his respect for the music, it should be OK, but we don’t want a talcy floor in the Albert Hall. Fingers crossed

I'm in a strange place, musically (even for me!) with my attention mainly divided between Cabaret Voltaire and PIL. Both of whom progressed from anarchic anti-rock experimentalists into mainstream, commercial (gasp!) entities.

Public Image Limited '9' (1989)



When I saw Siouxsie & the Banshees on the Kaleidoscope tour, I was blown away by guitarist John McGeogh who had recently transferred from Magazine, his distinctive style is the foundation of '9' and allows John Lydon's familiar howl to ride over a well-crafted backdrop of powerful 80's Rock.

This is another record that I'm approaching for the first time and it surprises me by being both melodic and accessible, even more than the mighty 'Album'.

'9' is solid and enjoyable but marks the point where PIL became part of the establishment rather than the satirical outsiders they had started out as.
