Get your speakers right and you're 90% there. Buy an amplifier that is cable of driving them, using a vinyl source will most likely decrease your budget for speakers compared to digital, but nothing is set in stone.

Knowing what I now know, can afford and use easily then it’s a digital front end, followed by Dac then Speakers then Amplification. Dabbling with cables and other peripherals can tune but would be the last resort after the above. I’m afraid I would never go back to either a record or a CD deck.

As a luddite, I'm still heavily invested in vinyl and to do it properly is pretty costly. Otherwise, for a digital based setup, I'd have to say loudspeakers, closely followed by amplification.
