Quick quiz:

What is the only album to feature guest appearances by both Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton?

Give up?

'Stephen Stills' (1970)

Image

Jimi's the one on the left. But seriously - if even Neil Young calls you a 'genius' then there must be some truth in it. As the driving force behind Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash, Stephen Stills displays formidable talent. Most of the instrumentation of the massive first CS&N record was played by Stills and here he lets rip on his own.

This LP is a real showcase of writing and arrangement, it is a pity his later career was marred by alcohol and personality-clashes.

Genius? Darn right. :guiness;

I never understood the description of Leonard Cohen's songs as 'music to slash your wrists by'. I think they confused content with presentation. Sure the voice was gravelly and strangely tuned, let's say, but songs like "Suzanne" were very clearly love songs. Even "So long Marianne" had an upbeat lift ('it's time to love and laugh and cry about it all again').

Now my latest listen is the opposite

The music is upbeat, lively, twangy; the voice is rich and golden; the subject matter is, well, pretty dire. I give you, for example, "Lessons in Depression"

I'll leave you to find 'Old Henry'.
