Todays CD player tech

Unread post by tweet_my_ribbon »

I'm still using a Sony DVD player to play both CD and DVD video. OK it sounds pretty good but a dedicated CD machine would be better. The Doc put forward the small chinese ( I think) player as worthy. Ali express had one a while ago.

My favourite CD player so far has been the Micromega stage 2. Although that was years ago, before NVA. It was used for over a decade and sounded almost vinyl like to my ears. Never had a better sounding player. I've been looking at lots of new players, both low and high price units. It's been so long since a dedicated CD was added to my hi-fi. I am drawn to players by Lyngdorf, YBA, Quadral Aurum, Micromega, Astin Trew, for a start.

What CD do you use and what's you're opinion of the sound ? My pre/power/cables/speakers are NVA.
NVA amps, speakers, interconnects & speaker cables produce the music.

With help from Technics, Audio Technica, Jelco, Musical Fidelity, Cyrus & Soneteer.

I have not had a ‘new’ cdp but with Nva amps.
With the Nva amps I loved the Musical Fidelity E600- was amazing- also the linn Mimik was good too- I had a Meridian 206 - surprisingly the MF & Linn out played it.
I have made my own from a dvd/cd rom and via a dac sounds really good- I love playing it. I have to recommend a good dac before a good transport though

I use a Marantz CD48 and a Philips CD753. After following the advice on the Lampizator website.
Paid about £20 for each of them.

I'd be quite happy to bring them to a CD player bake-off.
I expect that there will be better CD players out there. But so far I've not been able to justify any extra expense. As so far I've found minimal sonic differences between digital sources.

It seems to make a lot of sense. To buy a well rated CD player for about £20 and use that as a reference to compare against any challengers.

I also found the song Ps3 to be a good cd spinner

I have an arcam delta 170.3 transport (cdm1 mk2 transport) and a topping dac. The delta is lovely but is old. If i was to do it now i would buy one of the new audiolab cd transports, they are about 380 quid and buy a dac to go with it.
It would be a scaleable way to do it. Change the dac when you get bored

I use a Project RS transport, good transport but if you have large hands a bit fiddly to get the cd out. If I had the money it would definitely be a Jays CDT4

The Doc was a big fan of the Shanling EC1B player.

Image

available from AliExpress for under 200 pounds.

Shanling make a range of CD players, some are esoteric designs with valves, and are highly regarded in the USA.

I'm sticking with my Cambridge CXC transport for now but the best-sounding standalone CDP I have is an Arcam Diva CD62T which has a silky, rich sound.

One CD player I have long wanted to hear is the Kenwood DP7090. This has a superb transport and 4 Burr-Brown chips in the DAC section. It's.cheaper brother, the DP4090 is in a system here and is a big, powerful performer.

I've no experience of modern cd players as I've been lucky with a couple of classic models. Ironically, one is about to have a repair (it's second, after a laser replacement), as the IEC filter went bang. However, that's pretty good going for 26 years.

The player? Micromega Classic Solo - it made me into a cd believer:
